Beach Clean-Up for a Better Planet

Beach Clean-Up for a Better Planet

At UWC Thailand, our commitment to sustainability and environmental action shines through in both our everyday learning and community events.

In January, our Grade 1 students, inspired by their Unit of Inquiry ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, explored the solar system and discovered that Earth is the only planet known to support life. Motivated to protect our precious home, they took action by visiting Nai Yang Beach for a clean-up. The young students were surprised by the amount of litter they found, sparking thoughtful conversations about how even small actions can have a big impact. Afterwards, they collaborated with Kru Amanda, our Primary–Middle School Art Teacher, to create stunning nature-inspired portraits using found natural materials, deepening their connection with the environment through creativity and care.

In May, our school community joined forces with Plastic Free Phuket and participated in a special beach clean-up hosted by Sustainable Mai Khao and Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. This initiative provided access to a new stretch of Mai Khao Beach, created space for collaboration with sustainability champions like Little Ocean Heroes, and offered hands-on experiences in waste sorting and environmental stewardship. In less than two hours, 16 dedicated participants collected and sorted nearly 83 kilograms of waste.

These experiences highlight the values of action, connection, and responsibility- at all ages. From curious six-year-olds to passionate community members, we are united in our mission to protect our planet, one clean-up at a time.
