UWC ISAK Japan is a full-boarding international high school and a member of the United World Colleges movement. The school is accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT), and all graduates receive a Japanese high school diploma. Currently, 200 students from 73 countries attend UWC ISAK Japan, with 70% of students receiving full or partial need-based scholarship support. 30% of enrolled students are Japanese, with the remaining 70% coming from homes outside of Japan.

Our short course (ISAK Summer School) focuses on three core components: Leadership, Design and Diversity. Summer School brings in middle school students with diverse backgrounds and is seeking energetic and caring faculty members who can support and organise the programme, team and students during our 13-day summer programme held at our beautiful campus in Karuizawa, Japan.

As a faculty member, you will have the opportunity to design and lead an experiential course, as well as assist with various tasks throughout the programme while working closely with students, counsellors, and UWC ISAK staff in a hands-on immersive experience.

Academic:

  • Design and implement curriculum supporting programme goals and course vision, with guidance from UWC ISAK staff. Deliver opportunities for students to engage in challenging, project-based coursework.
  • Collaborate with volunteer counsellors and other Summer School faculty to include diverse perspectives and support programme synergies.

Community:

  • Join other teachers, counsellors, and staff to discuss feedback and improve the summer school experience in real-time, make decisions that affect the community as it develops, and take on unforeseen challenges and responsibilities as they arise.
  • Facilitate students on various projects to co-create their summer school experience.

Residential:

  • Guide students and support volunteer counsellors to understand and practice leadership throughout their experience, provide emotional support and encouragement, and serve as a role model of school culture.
  • Additionally, assist with regularly scheduled duty blocks for student chaperoning and safety.

Requirements

  • Advanced level of English language competence.
  • Experience in a multiple workshop designed facilitation or teaching.
  • Experience working with children and teenagers with English as their second language.
  • Experience in creating class curriculum and pedagogy in line with UWC values and mission.

Pre-task:

Please prepare a lesson plan of your course for the programme, including the course title, goals, and each lesson's objectives. Please also include an explanation of energisers and activities you plan to incorporate in your course. Along with that, also include a vision for your course/programme elements you would incorporate. In the time span of 14 days, you will teach three - four 75 - 90 minute workshops to a group of up to 25 students. You will then support three sessions for about 10 - 15 students who choose to go deeper into your topic to work in teams on a project. Please create a proposal that fits within this timeframe. You will have to upload this in the application.

Respond to the staff application here and submit your CV through the form. Send any requests for additional information to our Summer School Office at [email protected].
