Rooted in Action: A School-Wide Mangrove Planting Effort

Continuing our community-wide commitment to environmental stewardship, students from across UWC Thailand came together this year to take meaningful action in restoring our local mangrove ecosystems.

Throughout the year, our Grade 1 and 2 students have been actively involved in every stage of the mangrove growing cycle—from potting propagules in our school nursery to learning how to transplant them into the wild. In a beautiful display of peer mentorship, Grade 2 students proudly guided Grade 1 students through each step of the planting process.

To showcase their learning and leadership, students created informative banners detailing the mangrove life cycle and planting steps. These are now proudly displayed at our on-campus mangrove nursery as a lasting educational resource for the community.

This hands-on work culminated in a joyful mangrove planting day involving not only students but also their parents, deepening the connection between family, school, and nature.

Over the April break, our commitment extended to the upper school as well—Grade 11 and 12 students participated in a mangrove planting trip near Cape Yamu. This was part of a decade-long restoration effort, coordinated by the MANTA Mangrove team and supported by the UWC Thailand Global Concerns Fund. With 350 new mangroves planted during this trip, the total number planted by our community has
now reached an incredible 45,000.

This year also marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Dream for Trees, an organization that will provide three years of financial support for our mangrove planting and nursery maintenance. Together, we are aiming to create a digital mangrove planting handbook, amplifying student voice and knowledge beyond our campus.

These collective efforts reflect UWC Thailand’s long-standing dedication to sustainability, student agency, and community action. By learning with their hands in the soil, our students are not only restoring ecosystems—they’re growing into thoughtful changemakers.
