UWC For Afghan Youth

UWC For Afghan Youth

Our response to the Educational Crisis in Afghanistan

The need

An estimated 1.4 million girls have been deliberately denied access to secondary education since 2021.

Our Response

In response to the 2021 events in Afghanistan, UWC launched targeted initiatives to address the escalating crisis. Through the UWC for Afghan Youth Appeal over 150 Afghan students, including 139 girls, have engaged in vital learning and empowerment opportunities. 39 have joined UWC schools worldwide, engaging in the two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

Additionally, the Learning Bridge programme— an initiative funded by Education Cannot Wait and delivered in partnership with Amala—  further seeks to empower Afghan girls worldwide.

Our Impact
  • 39 Afghan girls have attended 14 UWC schools and colleges with financial support since the initiative’s launch.
  • 72% of Afghan scholars enrolled at UWC schools since 2022 are young women.
  • 16 graduates have progressed to tertiary education, securing scholarships at leading universities, including Yale (US), Brown (US), and Utrecht (The Netherlands)
