Lighting the Path to a Greener Future at UWC Dilijan

In summer of 2024, UWC Dilijan launched a new sustainability project to make the route from campus to nearby city areas safer and more eco-friendly. Using 10 solar-powered streetlamps, the college now illuminates this path in a way that’s kind to the environment and easy on resources.

These solar-powered LED lamps are a smart addition. Each lamp costs around $100, and with a lifespan of 10 years, they’re built to last without the need for maintenance. During the day, solar panels attached to each light capture sunlight to charge internal batteries, which can power the lights for up to two nights – perfect for cloudy days.

The lamps also include motion sensors to save energy. They automatically turn on at 20% brightness when it gets dark and ramp up to 100% when someone walks by, returning to 20% after 20 seconds if no movement is detected.

Beyond lighting the way for students, the project is also a demonstration for the city, showing how solar-powered streetlamps can be practical and cost-effective. This is a small but significant step toward a sustainable future, proving that renewable energy solutions are both possible and smart for the long term.
